Peruvian Painting on Leather: Preserving Cultural Craftsmanship

A Celebration of Heritage and Handcraft
Every so often, a piece arrives at our shop that radiates both artistry and history - this Peruvian painting on leather was one of those treasures. Hand-painted in vivid color and detail, it reflects the storytelling traditions of Peruvian folk art, where every brushstroke carries cultural meaning and a connection to the natural world.
Our client discovered this unique piece abroad and wanted a framing approach that would honor its craftsmanship while protecting the delicate surface for years to come.
Framing a Rare Medium
Leather is a living material - textured, flexible, and richly organic. It requires a framing approach that preserves its shape, surface, and dimension. For this project, we used a float mount technique, allowing the naturally torn and uneven edges of the leather to remain fully visible.
The art’s deep earthen tones and striking reds were enhanced by a matte black background, which provided strong contrast and visual depth. This presentation highlights the painted figures - birds, flowers, and animals - while maintaining the handmade authenticity that makes the piece so captivating.
A Frame with Warmth and Balance
We paired the artwork with a walnut Larson Juhl wood frame, chosen for its natural tone and subtle grain. Its simplicity lets the detailed, expressive painting take center stage, while the warm brown complements the earthy palette of the leather.
This design strikes a balance between rustic texture and contemporary refinement, creating a museum-quality display that feels timeless and grounded.
Protection and Preservation
Because this is a painted leather surface, we used Tru Vue Museum Glass, offering 99% UV protection and nearly invisible clarity. This ensures the colors remain brilliant and that the fine brushwork is visible without glare or distortion.
Archival, reversible mounting techniques were used to avoid damage to the natural fibers, ensuring that the artwork remains stable and protected for generations.
Framing with Story and Soul
This project embodies the essence of custom framing - bringing respect, craftsmanship, and care to a one-of-a-kind work of art. When the client picked up the finished piece, they were struck by how the framing amplified the story and vibrancy of the artwork without overshadowing its handmade origins.
At JW Frame Crafters, we love framing pieces like this - art that connects cultures, celebrates creativity, and keeps memories alive through thoughtful design.
