Honoring Service: Framing the Bronze Star Medal

Bronze Star Medal and certificate framed in a black Larson Juhl shadowbox with blue suede mat and Museum Glass.

A Tribute to Duty and Devotion

Some projects carry a deeper emotional weight—ones that remind us why we do what we do. This custom framing project was commissioned by a client’s wife who wanted to honor her husband’s years of service and sacrifice. As a decorated member of the United States Armed Forces, he earned not one, but two Bronze Star Medals for his exceptional performance during multiple deployments.

Her wish was to present him with a framed display that not only preserved these symbols of courage but did justice to the story behind them—a lifetime of dedication, resilience, and integrity.

The Bronze Star Medal

The Bronze Star Medal is one of the most prestigious military decorations awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces for heroic or meritorious achievement in a combat zone. Each medal tells a story of valor and commitment under extraordinary circumstances.

Our client’s husband served in the 447th Explosive Ordnance Disposal, 79th Ordnance Battalion, where his actions directly contributed to mission success and the safety of others. This recognition stands as a proud testament to his courage and professionalism.

Designing a Display Worthy of Honor

When working on military awards, our approach always begins with respect—for both the individual and the symbol of their service. For this piece, we selected a deep shadowbox design to provide dimension and balance between the framed certificate and the mounted medal.

A crisp blue suede mat serves as the backdrop, reflecting both the Air Force’s color palette and the dignity of the medal itself. The mat’s surface adds a refined texture that enhances the depth of the design.

Strength and Sophistication

The frame itself is a matte black Larson Juhl profile, chosen for its clean lines and quiet strength. It doesn’t compete with the medal—it complements it. The contrast between the bold black frame and the vibrant blue mat draws the viewer’s eye toward the medal and certificate, allowing the details to speak for themselves.

Precision-cut openings ensure that the medal and ribbon bar sit perfectly aligned, while the certificate rests securely in its own window—each element given its rightful place of honor.

Protection That Lasts a Lifetime

To safeguard the medal and certificate for years to come, we used Tru Vue Museum Glass, offering 99% UV protection and exceptional clarity. It reduces glare while preserving every intricate detail of the award and signature.

Each element was mounted using archival, acid-free materials to ensure the integrity of both the document and the medal. The final result is a display that will remain pristine, even decades from now.

A Gift That Says It All

When his wife presented the finished piece, it was more than a birthday gift—it was a gesture of gratitude, pride, and love. It’s moments like these that remind us why custom framing matters. A thoughtfully designed frame doesn’t just hold memories—it transforms them into timeless tributes.

At JW Frame Crafters, we are deeply honored to have a role in preserving these personal histories—each one a chapter in the greater story of service and sacrifice.
