Restoring a Watercolor with Ornate Silver Framing

Restored watercolor in ornate silver frame with bead accents, Conservation Clear Glass, and original matting.

A Lesson in Hanging Art

At JW Frame Crafters, we always remind customers—use two hooks when hanging your artwork! A single hook can cause stress on the frame and result in accidents. Unfortunately, this beautiful watercolor recently suffered just that. The original frame broke, the glass shattered, and the artwork shifted inside the matting. Our customer brought it to us for repair, and we were determined to restore it to its former beauty.

Disassembly and Cleanup

The first step was careful disassembly. Broken glass inside a frame can pose serious risks to the artwork. We removed every fragment, ensuring that the watercolor itself remained safe and unharmed. Fortunately, the mats surrounding the artwork had stayed pristine, which meant we could retain the original matting. This not only preserved the authenticity of the original design but also gave continuity to the restored piece.

Repositioning the Artwork

Once the broken elements were cleared, we carefully repositioned the watercolor inside its matting. Proper alignment is key to presentation. The artwork was adjusted back into its correct place, ensuring both balance and visual harmony. With the matting intact, this step allowed the piece to once again feel whole, with the composition framed exactly as intended.

A New Ornate Silver Frame

The damaged frame needed replacement, but we wanted to preserve the original look. To do so, we sourced a design from Omega Moulding’s Margaux Collection. This ornate silver frame features delicate bead accents and a traditional profile. It captures the elegance of the original while adding the strength and stability needed for long-term display. The finish highlights the watercolor’s soft tones, echoing the light reflected across the landscape.

Upgrading Glass and Backing

For protection, we upgraded the glazing to Tru Vue Conservation Clear Glass. This choice provides 99% UV protection, reducing the risk of fading while also minimizing glare. Combined with the archival matting, the glass ensures the watercolor will remain vibrant for decades. We also added new acid-free backing, further safeguarding the piece against environmental factors. These improvements elevate the restoration beyond simple repair, giving the artwork modern, archival-grade protection.

Finished with Care

The final touches are as important as the restoration itself. Once the frame was sealed and completed, we carefully wrapped the finished piece in protective bubble wrap to ensure safe transport. To help prevent future accidents, we included two hooks for hanging. A secure, balanced display means less stress on the frame and long-term peace of mind for the owner.

Restoring Beauty and Confidence

This restoration project turned a damaged piece into an heirloom-ready display. For our customer, it meant the relief of knowing a cherished watercolor was not only saved but enhanced with upgraded protection. For us, it was another chance to showcase the craftsmanship and care that go into every frame at JW Frame Crafters. This project stands as a reminder—sometimes accidents happen, but with the right expertise, even broken frames can be restored to lasting beauty.
