Saturday Evening Post Cover – “The Framer”
A Classic Work of Illustration
The April 30, 1955 issue of the Saturday Evening Post featured an iconic cover titled The Framer. Created during an era when illustrated magazine covers captured everyday American life, this piece highlights the timeless charm of custom framing. The humor and subtle storytelling in the artwork make it both entertaining and nostalgic, perfectly suited for display.
The Story Behind “The Framer”
In the image, a customer contemplates frame choices while the framer, surrounded by endless samples, watches patiently. It humorously captures a moment still familiar today—the careful consideration of selecting the perfect frame. The composition reflects not only the aesthetics of mid-century illustration but also the enduring role of framers in bringing art to life.
Printing with Fine Art Quality
To preserve this piece of Americana, we printed the artwork on MOAB Baryta Rag fine art paper. This archival paper is renowned for its rich blacks, bright whites, and elegant surface sheen. It mimics the look of traditional darkroom prints while ensuring long-term durability. Every detail of the original illustration, from the vibrant yellow coat to the stack of frame samples, was captured with clarity and depth.
Framing with Hudson Collection Elegance
The framed presentation plays a vital role in showcasing the artwork. For this project, we selected a black and gold panel frame from Larson Juhl’s Hudson Collection. The Hudson profile combines refined craftsmanship with timeless style. Its black finish anchors the bold colors of the print, while the gold edge adds a touch of classic sophistication. Together, these elements honor the mid-century roots of the artwork while giving it a museum-quality finish.
Museum Glass Protection
To protect the print, we used Tru Vue Museum Glass. Known for its 99% UV protection, Museum Glass ensures the vivid colors will not fade over time. Its anti-reflective clarity removes distracting glare, making it feel as though there is no glass at all. This level of glazing allows the humor and detail of The Framer to shine, while preserving the print for decades to come.
A Playful Tribute to Framing
This project carries extra meaning at JW Frame Crafters, where framing is not only a craft but a passion. The Framer humorously captures the very essence of what we do each day—helping customers navigate the wide range of options to find the perfect design. Paired with modern printing, archival materials, and professional craftsmanship, this piece is more than a vintage magazine cover. It is a playful tribute to the art of framing itself.
